Loading... Please wait...While many of us dream of going back to school full time and getting an advanced degree, the financial realities of our lives sometimes dictate otherwise. In fact, going without a paycheck for several years while finishing a nursing degree is not usually an option for most of us with car and mortgage payments, kids and the general realities of life most of us face. Young students, who may still have financial support from their parents may have an easier time of it, but for most us, going without work for two or three years without a paycheck is out of the question.
In many ways traditional nursing schools compound the problem with huge amounts of information that must be memorized, covering complex tops, including math and science. With the travel time involved getting to and from class, actual class time and work done away from the class, it is almost impossible for many folks to do well in school and work a full-time job. The time demands are just too great.
There Are Many Educational Options In the Medical Field
In light of the current need for highly qualified nurses and other medical professionals, there has been a dramatic rise in online nursing schools over the past several years. For the busy professional, the benefits are myriad. Students can be flexible with their schedule and adjust the pace of their studies so that they will be able to work full time in addition to studying for their nursing degree. They can opt to take less number of subjects every semester, thereby stretching out the length of their program, but at least they also get to earn a living.
One thing to keep in mind is that in addition to the course fee, an additional fee is sometimes charged, though it is usually nominal and well worth the extra money required given the benefits of the online programs. Additionally, the student also has the ability to continue to work full time, which makes especially good sense from a financial perspective. They have the time and flexibility to earn a full-time living and go to school at a pace that meets their needs and professional goals.
Is Online Right For You?
One reason why online classes are becoming so popular for those who have full time jobs is that the students have the liberty to choose what time is most convenient for them to do their classroom work. As long as they complete their coursework and take their tests and quizzes within the time frame required by the instructor, they can do this at whatever time of day or night works for them, including weekends.
And another benefit - if the online nursing school student comes up against a class that they cannot pass, they have the ability to retake that portion of the curriculum. Sure, it is no fun to fail out on a class, but sometimes there is a lot to be learned from failure that can be applied next time around on the course. In traditional nursing schools, students who fail a course are typically removed from the program or put on strict probation. It is a very strict and competitive environment.
Think Carefully Before You Choose An Educational Path
One thing to consider is that to get an Associate's Degree in Nursing, you will have to already be a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Paramedic, or, in some states, respiratory therapists are permitted to participate in these programs. The good news is that a degree in licensed practical nursing, paramedics, and respiratory therapy takes on average about a year of full-time education. Then you would take an online bridge program to move from and LPN to an RN, or if you are a paramedic, you would move to RN as well. You should check with the individual requirements of your state to learn of the exact requirements in your area.
And a final spot of good news. Most employers want you to advance in your career, skills and training. And many of them will pay for some or part of your online degree program. Check with the human resources department of your employer and see what sorts of programs are available.
