Finding A Nursing School That Is Right For You

The nursing field has always been a prime choice for people seeking a rewarding and open profession. And with a large populace of aging baby boomers already in or entering retirement, the field is currently exploding with new and high-demand career opportunities. And this means that many jobs and careers in the nursing profession are virtually free from any worries regarding the recession or layoffs. The position of registered nurse is one of these high demand jobs, and the future looks bright for opportunities all around the country.

So, what does this mean for you? If you already work in the profession as an RN, then you are aware of the the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have great job security and the flexibility to find work practically anywhere you want -- regardless of what's happening with the economy in a broader sense. If you are considering becoming a nurse, then this information may be helpful to you as you begin your training for a career as an RN. There are a few things you will want to look for when selecting your nursing school. Choosing wisely will give you the best chance of success.

When you begin to look for a great nursing school, you'll absolutely want to choose an institution that is accredited and has a great reputation for placing graduates in an array of nursing positions. Regardless, you'll have to pass your exam upon completion of your coursework to get a nursing license, but an accredited school will make the process much easier because the subject of study will be in line with acceptable core curriculum. The two biggest bodies to check your potential school for are the NLNAC and the CCNE. If your school is accredited by either one, that's acceptable, but both would be ideal.

A second consideration to examine is how many students, as a percentage, regularly pass the national nursing exam, known as the NCLEX. Make sure to check a few years worth of data. If the school in question has over seventy five percent of students pass this exam on the first try, then chances are it's a pretty good school. If the school seems reluctant to release this information, then you might want to look at other alternatives for your education.

How to fund your education and pay for your tuition is another important concern. There are many options for tuition assistance, grants, scholarships and student loans. Because of their high interest, student loans may be the last option you'll want to choose. You don't want loads of debt when you graduate and are starting your career. Take the time to find out if the school you are considering has any other options other than student loans to help you out. There are many scholarship and grant programs available, and your school will have the resources to help you locate them, and determine if you meet the criteria for assistance. Look hard. They are out there.

Curriculum Is Key

You'll also want to be sure the school you're looking at has the curriculum available for the area of nursing you most want to pursue. For example, if you'd like to become a surgical nurse, then make sure the school in consideration has classes to give you the training that you'll need for this type of specialization. Some schools have this, while others don't, so it's important to shop around.

Becoming a nurse is a great career move, as jobs will be in high demand for a long time to come. And with demand comes an excellent salary structure with low competition for the jobs. The most important thing you can do now is to come to an understanding of what you want to achieve in the nursing field and pursue a great nursing school that can help you reach your goals. Putting in a little effort on the front end of the process can yield big advantages over the course of your career.
